The tree is a living link between earth and sky. A synthesis of the mineral and light, it is also a root-based connection to its kind. Trees have a spirit—the spirit of the woods—wild and imbued with the sacred. The thirteen short stories in this collection draw inspiration from the spirit of the woods: that instantaneous and indefinable connection to the Whole. It represents the poetic dimension of the metaphysical discourse developed in *L’obsolescence du réel*.
Most of the short stories evoke a bygone yet ever-enchanting era: that of my childhood on the family farm, and of rural life in the ancestral landscape of a remote corner of Poitou, before the advent of widespread desolation. The time in these stories is doubly otherworldly, with timeless forays into worlds that humans cannot comprehend.
Each short story is a tale built upon an authentic experience, surreptitiously infiltrated by the imagination to recreate a strange reality that is not entirely virtual—the reality of a potential world subject to the metamorphosis of humankind.
