The Gallic words ialon and brogilos have contributed to the formation of numerous place names, the modern endings of which are mainly of the -euil type. The spelling ###-euil and its regional variants ###-jol and ###-ieul are excellent indicators of Celtic etymology.
An inventory of place names derived from ialon and brogilos reveals an uneven distribution across France, with the highest concentration in Île-de-France and the Centre-Ouest region.
An analysis of the frequency and distribution of certain place names, such as Breuil, Verneuil and Neuil, leads to linguistic considerations, insofar as new etymological hypotheses are more consistent with the statistical patterns observed.
Place names in the Deux-Sèvres department (France) have been the subject of a detailed typological, etymological and geographical study. 120 place names of Celtic origin have been catalogued, mapped and analysed, with new etymological interpretations proposed in some cases.
